Painting, William was born 14 April 1886 in Heythrop, Oxfordshire. Son of Frederick Painting and Sarah Williams. He married Ethel Victoria Barnes 6 May 1911 in Adlestrop. He appears on the 1901 census for Churchill, Oxfordshire; 1911 for Kingham, Oxfordshire. On 11 December 1915 he was living in Cornwell, Oxfordshire. He appears on the electoral rolls for 1922-1966 and on the 1939 England and Wales Register. He lived on Main Street. He fought in WW1 for the 5th Battalion Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. Regiment number 242986. He was based at Cowley Barracks, Oxfordshire. He was posted to France on 15 September 1917. He suffered from a gas attack on 10 August 1918, and from shrapnel wounds to the leg and back on 29 September 1918. He served a total of 2 years 34 days, of which 1 year 18 days were served abroad. He was discharged on 13 March 1919. He was 5' 7 1/2" and had a 36" chest. He was a farm carter. He died in 1966. See Photographs.
